Pomona College Orchestra Concerto Competition
Each October or November, the orchestra stages a
competition to select student soloists, usually to play in the following
Spring. Eligibility requirements are established by the music department and
can vary slightly from year to year. In general, however, the competition is
not restricted to Pomona
students, but instead is open to any musician who participates in both Pomona’s ensembles and
its private lessons program. Prospective soloists may enter with complete works
or individual movements of longer works, although complete works are preferred.
The winners, one or two each year, are selected by a small panel of music
department faculty.
Last year, Yoon-Chan Kim (Pomona ’10) performed Mozart’s Flute Concerto
#1 with the orchestra on its March 2008 concerts. This year, the available programming slot is
on the March 2009 program, and the orchestra once again looks forward to
collaborating with a brilliant student soloist.
